Recently I reconnected with a junior-high classmate, Louis Edozien. His father, a physician and researcher, had escaped Nigeria during a civil war in the early 1970s, and brought over the family soon after. What Louis may not have been aware of completely, was that a segregation and civil rights war still raged around us in Chapel Hill. Louis went on to Harvard, and back to Nigeria, where he has become a successful businessman. It’s a lot more complicated than just this, but I find his story so inspiring. It also made me want to post this fabulous profile of my wonderful father, a civil rights and American historian, who died two years ago. It’s written by our valued friend and his former PhD student, Dan Carter, and very inspiring.
